Original Solution
Since I first investigated Radio Control over Internet, technology has changed considerably. At first, there was only Ham Radio Deluxe remote and IP-Sound. It worked fairly well, but there was some problems with passing control through firewalls Sound latency was also an issue and IP-Sound performance was flaky. Since I wanted to access my FT-450 on the road outside of my LAN, I wanted a more reliable solution. Now, it may be that these issues are resolved with the HRD/IP-Sound solution since I gave it up, but I had to move on.
My second attempt was a comprehensive solution designed and implemented by John Corl, a Network Engineer and Owner of Custom Thinking (JohnCorl.com). This system worked great and resolved all my issues and I used it until I upgraded my radio to a Flex - 5000. The solution essentially was a combination of HRD and a sip phone. That is a considerable simplification since John hosted the sip phone and included Cisco equipment for the network connections. The system consisted of:
Inside my house (Radio Room)
- Yaesu FT-450 HF (Radio)
- Dell Laptop (For radio control and network connection)
- Ham Radio Deluxe local software (For computerized or CAT radio control)
- Glentek AT2 RTE/FXO (To encode the analog sound out to telephone protocol and decode telephone sound in for the mike)
- 1104 ATA to connect the phone protocol to the internet
- Cisco Integrated Services Router to pass the sound and control data to the IP provider
Imperial Site (sip server)
- Cisco 1760 (Call Manager)
- Cisco 3660 (To connect to the IP provider)
Remote Site (Hotel,etc)
- A computer connected to the Internet IP provider
- Ham Radio Deluxe remote (For remote control)
- SIP phone connected to IP provider (For sound)

Later on Ham Radio Deluxe Remote was replaced by LogMeIn.
